Nicolas Grenier
In this video by filmmaker Jhovany Quiroz, Montreal-based artist Nicolas Grenier guides us through his solo exhibition, Flags. According to the artist, the starting point for this exhibition was the desire to take on the flag, this supreme icon of nationalism, and to reverse its logic. Traditional flags deploy simple graphic elements and a few pure colors to produce a clear, exclusive signifier of identity. Grenier "wanted to make works that, while evoking the idea of a flag, visually and emotionally contradict its principles." Flags imainges what a post-nationalist world would look like if we move past the idea of nation-states.
