Luis De Jesus Los Angeles is very pleased to announce Alma Ruiz and Aaron Maier-Carretero in Conversation, to be held on Saturday, April 2nd, at 2:00 PM. This talk is presented in conjunction with the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, currently on view through April 9, 2022. This is an in-person event. Seating is limited and reservations are required.

Alma Ruiz is Senior Fellow at the Center of the Business and Management of the arts, Claremont Graduate University, where she teaches Curatorial Practices. A former senior curator at The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles, Ruiz curated numerous exhibitions focusing on emerging artists and the postwar period in the United States, Italy, and Latin America. Her projects included Suprasensorial: Experiments in Light, Color, and Space; Poetics of the Handmade; The Experimental Exercise of Freedom: Lygia Clark, Gego, Mathias Goeritz, Hélio Oiticica, Mira Schendel; and solo exhibitions of Maurizio Cattelan, Magdalena Fernández, Carlos Garaicoa, Alexandra Grant, Kcho, Piero Manzoni, Ana Mendieta, Ernesto Neto, Gabriel Orozco, Rosângela Rennó, and Francesco Vezzoli. 

She curated the 20 Bienal de Arte Paiz in Guatemala City and exhibitions at the Fundación Jumex, Mexico City; the Center for Contemporary Art, Tel Aviv; the Fundación Telefónica, Buenos Aires; the Fowler Museum at UCLA and the Craft and Folk Art Museum (now the Craft Contemporary), Los Angeles.

She is currently working on an exhibition with artist Luis Flores that opens at the Craft Contemporary in October 2022.

Aaron Maier-Carretero is a Latinx visual artist who lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. He obtained his BFA from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago and also attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He has exhibited at the Queens Museum, The Sculpture Center, and The National Arts Club in New York City; The Art Institute of Chicago and The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; The Phillips Collection, The University of Maryland Art Gallery, and the Washington Project for the Arts, among other DMV venues.

His work is held in the collections of The Phillips Collection and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities in Washington, DC; The University of Maryland Art Gallery, College Park; and the Art Bank Collection, as well as numerous private collections.
