Hugo Crosthwaite, who won first prize in the National Portrait Gallery’s fifth triennial Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition (2019), incorporated scientific illustrations, images from popular culture, and art historical references to create a dynamic portrait of Dr. Fauci. Through stop-motion drawing animation, Crosthwaite examines the career of this singular scientist and public servant, who managed two of the gravest health crises in recent history: HIV/AIDS and COVID-19. This innovative approach to portraiture permitted him to create a life story of Dr. Fauci and capture many of his contributions to medicine and the controversies that surrounded them. Crosthwaite’s portrait debuted alongside new commissions by Kenturah Davis, David Hockney, Kadir Nelson, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Robert Pruitt, and Ruven Afanador.
